Information
The South Hills/Cloverleaf
YMCA is changing the face of tomorrow. A commitment to people is
at the heart of everything that the YMCA does - to their health,
their children, their safety, their futures. Our commitment is also
to make all of our services and programs available to everyone regardless
of their ability to pay.
Our summer camps provide peace of mind to scores of parents and
create memories for thousands of children. Over 2,000 children attend
our summer camps every year. We are especially proud of Camp AIM.
Since 1968, Camp AIM has provided nearly 4,000 youth and adults
who have physical, mental, emotional and social disabilities with
a chance to Achieve, become Independent and to be Motivated (AIM).
This unique six-week summer program, made up of aquatics, physical
education, music, and art, is one of the oldest and largest camps
of its kind. Its dedicated, caring adult staff help teach new self-help
and socialization skills while reinforcing skills learned during
the school year. Over 120 children attend annually from Allegheny
and Washington Counties. This year, we plan to expand our aquatic
segment with a heavier emphasis on swimming lessons. We are also
expanding our pilot program in vocational training/transition so
that we can help more campers learn skills they can use in the workforce.
Camp AIM was created and is sustained because of need. The campers
who attend have limited opportunities for recreation and socialization
during the summer. The program is primarily supported by contributed
funds raised during this campaign.
Our commitment to the youth of our community also shines through
our youth sports programs. Every year, over 3,000 kids participate
in our soccer, basketball, hockey, and cheerleading programs. In
our team sport programs, volunteer coaches place the emphasis on
learning to play cooperatively and fairly rather than on the competitive
aspect of the sport. The skills learned on the playing field will
serve all of these children well as they move on toward adulthood.
As the leading provider of water safety education in the South Hills,
we teach 2,000 children to swim each year, ensuring their safety
and providing them with another key to continued health.
The Guide/Princess programs are our major initiative to help families.
These programs provide parents and children with time together.
Small groups of parent/child pairs spend time together and develop
important lasting friendships while guiding their children through
group activities. These programs deepen parent/child bonds and just
as importantly create a support network for parents to help them
navigate the challenges of parenthood in a time when family members
are pulled in so many directions.
The Campaign for Strong Communities is our way of making all of
this possible. Program fees and membership dues do not cover all
the costs of these vital community programs. In addition, each year
the South Hills/Cloverleaf YMCA gives out scholarships so that everyone
who would like to participate in our programs can. These scholarships
are used by a wide spectrum of people - they ensure that children
are in childcare or camp and not at home alone; they make it possible
for children with disabilities to be engaged in appropriate activities
every day ensuring that they do not lose hard won skills over the
summer; they help families who are struggling enroll their children
in youth sports or swimming lessons with their friends. By contributing,
you will provide opportunities for positive development that every
child needs and deserves to grow personally regardless of their
abilities and you will help ensure that parents can go to work with
peace of mind only possible when they know that their children are
safe. Help us build Strong Kids, Strong Families and Strong Communities!
